Last Sunday, it was me down with the flu. This Sunday, I am home with Seth who came down with it yesterday. He had a rough night last night with fevers and throwing up. He is feeling somewhat better today, but is resting a lot. We didn't know if the fever would come back again, so I am staying home with him and Brina today.
Thankfully, Brina is nearly sleeping through the night now, so I was free to help Seth last night. BJ helped too. Brina is going about 7 hours at night. We are almost there!
And now, I want to share a great cooking tip. I hate chopping onions! The onions here are . . . Hold on while I try to think of the English word! The only word that comes to mind is a Swahili word--"hatari" which means . . . dangerous! There you go. The word definitely fits! Tears stream down my face as I chop. I absolutely dread having to chop onions.
Several weeks ago, the day I was in labor with Brina in fact, I was helping, or rather trying to help Mrs. Madory cook supper as I waited for BJ to get back from Nakuru. We were chatting. She was chopping onions and crying over it! I commented on the onions here being so strong, and she said that she knew the secret. She just forgets to do it while she's chopping onions! She told me that the secret is to keep your mouth closed the whole time you chop.
I thought, "Yeah right. I doubt that it would work for me. It just sounds too easy." Well, I've been trying it since I've been home cooking. When I forget to keep my mouth shut, I cry like a baby. Yesterday, I purposely clamped my lips shut the whole time and didn't shed a tear!
I don't know if it works for everyone. I'm still skeptical! Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems to work for me! So NOBODY talk to me while I chop my onions!!!

That's an interesting tip. I've heard to light a match, blow it out, and hold the wooden end in your mouth while chopping. It works, too. Either way, your mouth stays closed! :) I'll have to try without the match. Love you, Hannah
How funny! I'll have to try that!
(And, sorry Seth is sick. So happy, too, that Brina is letting you rest...)
Just tried this, and I think it worked. Onions don't make me cry every time I cut them, but this one seemed especially strong and probably would have. I think I'm sold! :) Thanks for the tip!
Interesting! I will have to pass it on to my onion choppers ... they don't stop talking :) so this could be a very big challenge :).
